Coach Paul Dietzel took advantage of a new substitution rule which allowed any player to come off the field, and go back in again, once each quarter. This wasn't exactly 2 platoon football, but it allowed Coach Dietzel to run with 3 platoons: a 2 way unit of his best players, an offensive second team, and a defensive second team.
